'Argentum II', 40x97, Claire Benn, 2023 Landscape.jpg

Landscape is where I place myself – be that in a remote wilderness, a wildflower meadow, a beach or a woodland. A piece of cloth (usually linen or hemp) is always my starting point. Earth pigments provide the colour and connect me to the soil. Soya milk binds pigment to cloth and enables me to communicate a sense of a place. Thread is the final addition, adding quiet details, accents and a surface texture that fingertips can feel.

These are my quiet materials, used to evoke solitude, stillness and silence.

  • TEXTure; online course, January 2026

My new course with Take Two will be available for registration in January 2026. TEXTure is a course focused on adapting and using your own handwriting as a form of mark making and visual expression. Text is simply a mark and this course will enable you to create elegant artworks using texture, line, shape and dynamic colour. Clear video-based instruction supported by illustrated written material, a private community portal where you can engage with myself and others, and three live Q&A’s.

Registration will open in January 2026. Please visit Take Two, where you can pre-register your interest with no obligation:

CURRENT WORK - ‘Unearthed’

A sense of the primitive, of having been unearthed, time-worn artefacts, rawness of material, historic reference.
